Stellar’s XLM was one of the most well-known cryptocurrencies during the past market cycles. It’s withstood shifting narratives, regulatory pressure, and even competition from newer blockchains. But survival does not equate to a previous high. Investors might need more than just a broader wave of speculation for XLM to reach its former peaks.

Looking at the xlm price usd, it’s evident that this is something that is always useful for Stellar when payments, stablecoins, and tokenized assets become more popular. What’s trickier is whether or not these individual catalysts can push the XLM price up appreciably even as the broader altcoin market doesn’t follow suit.

XLM Has Historically Benefited From Broad Market Momentum

As is the case with many mature altcoins, XLM has usually fared well when investors are ready to gamble beyond Bitcoin. When Bitcoin prices rise, profits may flow from Bitcoin to Ethereum and then to smaller cryptocurrencies. This turnover can result in significant improvements even if the underlying project has not been significantly altered.

In past cycles, XLM reached much higher valuations thanks to that pattern. The rally was driven by robust retail demand, trading on the exchanges and cross-border payments excitement. But in a less bullish market, investors are more discerning. They might prefer to invest in Bitcoin, stablecoins, or a few high-growth networks rather than investing in hundreds of tokens.

Moreover, in the absence of a full-blown altcoin bull market, XLM would have to create its own momentum. This could be extremely beneficial for the cryptocurrency, especially because it has benefited from broad market momentum in the past.

Stellar’s Payments Use Case Still Matters

Stellar was developed to swiftly and cheaply transfer funds between countries. That mission is just as relevant as companies in the payments sector, fintech companies and financial institutions venture into blockchain settlement.

Specifically, the network is ideal for stablecoins and tokenized currencies. Digital currencies can be used to transfer traditional money digitally without relying on costly banking infrastructure. This might make Stellar useful in areas where international transactions are still slow or expensive.

But in this case, increased usage does not necessarily lead to a better XLM price. Many transactions can be done with little or no XLM. The native token may be the one that flies under the radar, with stablecoins getting the lion’s share of the attention.

To appreciate, investors must feel that the expanding activity will also drive up the demand for XLM as a reserve asset, trading asset, or source of network liquidity.

Tokenized Finance Could Create a New Narrative

Tokenization might prove to be the best independent catalyst. Banks and other financial institutions are increasingly prototyping and testing blockchain bonds, funds, and other traditional assets. With its speed, low fees, and compliance tools, Stellar is up to the competition in this growing market.

Stellar may find newfound respect as a platform that powers the issuance or settlement of tokenized assets for major institutions, going beyond its original target identity of remittance. XLM could then be considered an exposure to the blockchain-based financial infrastructure, rather than just another payments token.

This would provide the market with more justification to revalue the asset. It may even draw investors who are not that into meme coins or speculating on decentralized applications.

However, partnerships and pilot programs alone are insufficient. Stellar requires ongoing transactions, active users and significant liquidity. There’s been a shift in the market towards valuing blockchains based on words alone.

Competition Is Much Stronger Than Before

XLM now competes not just with traditional payment systems. It has to now compete against XRP, stablecoin networks, Ethereum layer-two and quicker smart contract blockchains.

Some of these competitors are also focusing on institutional payments and tokenization of assets. Some will have larger developer communities, better liquidity, or greater brand awareness among retail investors.

Stellar thus has to demonstrate that its strong suit in financial transfers is practical. Cheapness alone does not always suffice, as multiple networks can provide cheap transactions at present. Distribution, regulation and institutional trust could become more important than technical speed.

A Return to Former Highs Is Possible but Difficult

While XLM may still reach its previous highs without a full altcoin bull market in the making, a few catalysts would likely need to converge. Stellar would require more payment activities, institutional tokenization projects, and a higher demand for XLM.

A market-wide rally would also help the effort, as it would allow for a return of liquidity and attention to established altcoins. Stellar will need to achieve tangible adoption to ensure investors are confident the tokens will appreciate in value.

There is still an opportunity. But XLM’s next significant move may not be about a return to an old cycle, but about whether or not it can prove to be an indispensable part of the next iteration of global finance.
